PRESS RELEASE: All-New 2008 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid Debuts at Major League Baseball's All-Star Game

Malibu Hybrid production begins in October, available at dealerships soon after

SAN FRANCISCO – The all-new 2008 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid will join baseball’s other stars as it makes its world debut in the All-Star Fan Zone today. The Malibu Hybrid’s appearance continues through the last out of one of MLB’s highlights of the year.

Thanks to an affordable hybrid powertrain option, the all-new 2008 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid not only will be the most refined new midsize sedan in the neighborhood, but one of the most fuel-efficient, as well. Powered by the GM Hybrid System, the first-ever Malibu Hybrid delivers an EPA rating of 24 mpg city and 32 mpg highway – a two-mpg increase over the non-hybrid four-cylinder model – and will be Chevrolet value-priced, offering customers an affordable hybrid choice.

“The beauty of the Chevy Malibu Hybrid is that customers don’t have to choose between a stylish, expressive, fuel-saving sedan full of standard content and the gasoline that goes in the tank,” said Chevrolet General Manager Ed Peper. “The Malibu Hybrid‘s winning package of uncompromising design and fuel economy will help us assert leadership in the midsize sedan segment and meet the needs of Chevy customers.”

Production of the Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid is scheduled to begin in October, with vehicles arriving in dealerships shortly thereafter. The system will be available as a powertrain option on the base LS model, which also features Electric Power Steering, Automatic Climate Control and the StabiliTrak electronic stability control system.

The GM Hybrid system featured on the Malibu Hybrid saves fuel by using sophisticated controls and software, as well as a unique, 36-volt electric motor/generator mated to GM Powertrain’s 2.4L Ecotec VVT four-cylinder engine and Hydra-Matic 4T45 four-speed transmission. The GM Hybrid system maintains the vehicle’s sporty feel and seamlessly reduces fuel consumption by:

Shutting off the engine when the vehicle is stopped, to minimize idling
Restarting the engine promptly when the brake pedal is released
Enabling early fuel shut-off during vehicle deceleration
Capturing vehicle kinetic energy during deceleration through regenerative braking to charge the advanced nickel metal hydride battery
Performing intelligent battery charging when it is most efficient

The GM Hybrid system provides additional power, when required, during launch from the electric motor/generator. At wide-open throttle, such as during a passing maneuver, the system enhances acceleration by using the motor/generator to bolster the gasoline engine and achieve maximum power.

The GM Hybrid system also is designed to automatically maintain full accessory functionality – including climate control – when the vehicle is stopped, so that hybrid operation is seamless to the driver and passengers. The Malibu Hybrid delivers an appropriate balance of fuel economy and cabin comfort with an air conditioning system with two selectable modes. The Hybrid A/C mode favors more fuel-efficient performance by limiting the draw on the hybrid powertrain, while the normal mode provides maximum passenger comfort in hot climates and enhances defogging performance.

Malibu Hybrid models make a statement away from the gas pump, too, thanks to specific exterior appointments such as 16-inch low rolling resistance tires and unique hybrid badging. Inside, a special gauge cluster provides information and feedback about the hybrid powertrain’s operation.

The 2008 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid is covered by GM’s five-year / 100,000-mile powertrain warranty, the most comprehensive in the industry. In addition, the Malibu Hybrid’s advanced nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery pack is covered by an eight-year / 100,000-mile warranty.

Banned Again: Toyota Prius TV Ad Gets Axed For Exaggerating CO2 benefits!

Believe it or not but the British Adverting Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a second Toyota hybrid-car related ad in a month! This time it’s for a Prius TV ad that misleadingly claims it emits less CO2 than an equivalent diesel engine family car. About a month ago, ASA pulled the plug off a Lexus RX 400h magazine advert for falsely implicating that it caused little or no harm to the environment and had low CO2 emissions in comparison with all cars.

The Prius TV commercial, created by Saatchi & Saatchi Japan, claimed "what if all cars were like the Prius, with its hybrid synergy drive technology, it emits up to one tonne less CO2 per year" On-screen text stated "1 tonne of CO2 less than an equivalent family vehicle with a diesel engine. Average calculated on 20,000km a year. Toyota Prius: CO2 emissions: 104g/km".

The problem was that, according to ASA’s investigations, the chart used by Toyota to make the calculations held data on petrol and diesel cars as opposed to merely diesel. Moreover, while the average annual distance driven by private cars in the US was 20,000km, the average for the UK was 13,440km. -Click “Read More…” for ASA’s press release

Ad: A TV ad, for the Toyota Prius, claimed "what if all cars were like the Prius, with its hybrid synergy drive technology, it emits up to one tonne less CO2 per year" On-screen text stated "1 tonne of CO2 less than an equivalent family vehicle with a diesel engine. Average calculated on 20,000km a year. Toyota Prius: CO2 emissions: 104g/km".

Issue: The complainant challenged whether the claim "it emits up to one tonne less CO2 per year" misleadingly exaggerated the environmental benefits of the car.

Response: Toyota sent a chart that took an average of the emissions of new cars registered in 2005 and compared that with the emissions of the Prius. The chart showed that, on average, new cars registered in 2005 emitted 172g of CO2 / km, while the Prius emitted 104g / km. They said they had taken the difference of 68g/km and multiplied it by 20,000km, which they considered a reasonable average annual distance travelled by a car. That gave an emissions saving of 1.36 tonnes. The chart also gave emissions figures for individual cars with engines of between 1.2 and 2.2 litres. They said they had chosen 1.8 litres as a threshold of comparison because although the Prius had a 1.5 litre engine, they believed its output was comparable to a 2.0 litre engine. They sent a document that compared the output of the current Prius with the first generation Prius hybrid and the Toyota Allion, which had a 2.0 litre engine. They argued the chart showed that the Toyota Prius emitted one tonne less of CO2 than a range of cars with engines either side of their threshold of comparison and pointed out they had qualified the claim by stating "up to" 1 tonne less to make clear that the emissions saved would not always be as much as 1 tonne.

The Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre (BACC) said they had checked Toyota's evidence with an independent consultant, who had advised it was suitable to show that the Toyota Prius emitted significantly less CO2 than other cars.

Assessment: Upheld

The ASA noted on-screen text stated that the claim compared the Prius with "an equivalent family vehicle with a diesel engine" and that it made clear calculations were based on an annual driving distance of 20,000km a year. However, we noted that the chart sent by Toyota held data on petrol and diesel cars and that, while the average annual distance driven by private cars in the US was 20,000km, the average for the UK was 13,440km.

We noted that the chart drew on UK government data and compared the Prius against a range of cars from different manufacturers, but the document that measured the output of the car was produced inhouse and only compared the Prius against the previous model and another Toyota car.

We did not consider that document suitable to establish that the output of the Prius was comparable to all 2.0 litre cars registered in 2005. We noted that none of the cars with 1.5 litre engines featured in the chart emitted 1 tonne more CO2 than the Prius and that less than half of those new cars that had engines of less than 1.8 litres emitted 1 tonne more CO2 than the Prius.

We noted that Toyota had qualified the claim by stating "up to one ton less CO2 per year" and that the Prius emitted significantly less CO2 than some other cars with greater engine capacity, but we did not consider their evidence demonstrated that it emitted 1 tonne less than equivalent vehicles with diesel engines or that it took into account the average annual distance driven by private cars in the UK.

The ad breached CAP (Broadcast) TV Advertising Standards Code rules 5.1 (Misleading advertising), 5.2.1 (Evidence), 5.2.2 (Implications), 5.2.6 (Environmental claims) and 5.4.6 (Comparative advertising).

Action: The ad should not be broadcast again in the same form.

Toyota Worldwide Hybrid Sales Surpass 1 Million Mark

To be exact, as of May 31, 2007, Toyota has sold an amazing 1,047,000 hybrid car units worldwide. In all honestly, who’d believe back in 1997 when Toyota launched the first Prius in Japan, that ToMoCo would manage to pull it off selling over a million hybrid cars in 10 years? We dare to say that this accomplishment is even more astonishing than the fact that ToMoCo is one step away this year from dethroning GM as the world’s largest car manufacturer. Follow the jump for the official press release along with the chronology of Toyota’s Hybrid love affair and an analytical sales chart. -Continued

PRESS RELEASE: Tokyo - TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today that global cumulative sales of Toyota hybrid vehicles have topped the 1 million mark, with approximately 1,047,000 units sold worldwide as of May 31, 2007.

Toyota launched the Prius—the world's first mass-produced hybrid vehicle—in Japan in 1997 and began selling it in North America, Europe and elsewhere in 2000.

The second-generation Prius, equipped with the Toyota Hybrid System II, was introduced in 2003 with an emphasis on delivering both environmental performance and power. Over time, Toyota has expanded the use of its hybrid system to minivans, SUVs, rear-wheel-drive sedans and other vehicles. Hybrid vehicles have been enjoying good sales both in Japan and in over 40 countries and regions around the world, particularly North America.

Toyota began overseas production of hybrid vehicles in Changchun, China in 2005 and in Kentucky in the United States in 2006.

Toyota has calculated that as of April 30, 2007, worldwide sales of its hybrid vehicles since 1997 have greatly contributed to reductions in CO2 emissions, which are considered a cause of global warming, by producing approximately 3.5 million fewer tons of CO2 compared with the same class gasoline-powered vehicles of similar size and driving performance.

Toyota has positioned environmental responses as a priority management issue, and as such has made a concerted effort to popularize hybrid systems. It will actively continue to find ways to utilize the system’s high degree of applicability to double its hybrid lineup and will aim to achieve annual sales of 1 million units in the early part of the 2010s.

BMW EfficientDynamics: Watch out Toyota/Lexus...

Just returned from a very interesting trip to BMW’s headquarters in sub-zero (Celsius) Munich where I got a first hand view of BMW’s “EfficientDynamics” strategy. To make it simple, “EfficientDynamics” is BMW’s concept to overcome the apparent conflict of interests between better performance, on the one hand, and greater fuel economy, on the other WITHOUT the use of a hybrid powertrain.

Instead, BMW will focus on optimizing its cars all-round in every respect -while it continues to work on Hydrogen though. BMW will accomplish this by equipping its car with technologically advanced petrol & diesel engines, by making them lighter (e.g BMW M3’s 420Hp 4.0 V8 engine is 12kg / 26,5lbs lighter than the current 343Hp 3.2 R6) and more aerodynamic and most importantly, by improving energy management and hybridisation with the use of various components and concepts ranging from the Auto Start Stop Function via Brake Energy Regeneration all the way to the integration of an additional electric motor in an active transmission.

But unlike Toyota/Lexus Hybrid-powertrain tech which is only available to certain models, “EfficientDynamics” will make its appearance on every single BMW starting off with the facelifted 1-Series & 5-Series (3-Series and MINI models following later on this year). Thus meaning that systems like “Start & Stop” and “Brake Energy Regeneration” will be standard from the basic 116i & MINI ONE up to the next-gen M3 and the 760iL.

As BMW exec’s pointed out to me, apart from the energy management and hybridisation systems, this isn’t a first for BMW. For example, the much larger, safer, faster and luxurious 2007 320i consumes almost one-quarter less fuel than its predecessor did in 1982 while the 2007 525i asks for 30% less fuel than its 80’s ancestor. Therefore, what’s the fuss all about? While all these facts are true and albeit BMW is going to focus much more on technologies that’ll significantly reduce consumption and CO2, thing is that they had to find a way to market it, to make people say I want a BMW not only cause it’s sporty, sexy etc but also because its eco-friendly. EfficientDynamics is that way. -Continued: Click “Read More…” below

EfficientDynamics comprises the following areas of technology:

Further optimisation of the powertrain.

Introducing new fuel injection and combustion processes, we will further increase the degree of efficiency in the conversion of primary energy in the combustion engine. And I also see a significant potential in the area of transmission systems.

Energy management and hybridisation.

We see many possibilities to make intelligent use of the flow of energy within the car. The various components and concepts we use for this purpose range from the Auto Start Stop Function via Brake Energy Regeneration all the way to the integration of an additional electric motor in an active transmission.

Lightweight construction of cars.

Every kilo of weight in a car has a direct influence on fuel consumption. Using high-tech materials all the way from the engine to the body of the car, we are able time and again to break through the weight spiral.

Improved aerodynamics.

Less air resistance means lower consumption of energy. Apart from an aerodynam-ically perfect body, the BMW Group, with some models, is also introducing active air flap control in order to optimise the flow of air.

PRESS RELEASE: Innovation Day 2007. BMW EfficientDynamics.

Like the changeover to a new model, the presentation of a new generation of engines by BMW always creates particular expectations. Clearly, newly developed drive units are intended to offer significant improvements in as many areas as possible.

BMW now once again defines this progress in very clear and specific terms, presenting EfficientDynamics as the overriding philosophy behind precisely those qualities which enhance sheer driving pleasure while at the same time reducing fuel consumption and thus also optimizing the car’s emissions. Hence, every new power unit is lighter, more powerful and at the same time more fuel-efficient than its respective predecessor.

BMW’s leadership in technology and engine construction acknowledged the world over is based, not least, on the ability to consistently overcome the conflict of interests between growing dynamics, on the one hand, and optimised economy, on the other, in all vehicle and drive segments. This is clearly proven by the newly developed power units BMW is launching at the 2007 Innovation Day – clear and impressive proof of EfficientDynamics. Offering precisely these benefits, BMW’s new four-cylinder power units ensure a new dimension of all-round economy – and at the same time enable the motorist to enjoy the sheer driving pleasure so typical of a BMW in every respect.

Harmony of sheer driving pleasure and all-round economy.

The No 1 prerequisite for the harmony of driving pleasure and economy offered by BMW’s various engine concepts is the unique innovative power of BMW’s engine development specialists. And so the wide range of innovations giving the new generation of four-cylinder diesel engines their outstanding efficiency extends from the ultra-light aluminium crankcase through the latest version of common rail fuel injection all the way to Variable Twin Turbo technology featured for the first time in this drive segment. Despite an increase in output by 15 and, respectively, 10 kW (20 and, respectively, 14 hp), the new BMW 118d and the new BMW 120d offer an improvement in fuel economy over their respective predecessors by up to 16 per cent: In the EU test cycle the BMW 120d consumes just 4.9,the BMW 118d an even more impressive 4.7 litres/100 km, equal to57.6 and, respectively, 60.1 mpg Imp.

This progress is also of significance in view of the CO2 agreement made by ACEA, the European Association of Automobile Manufacturers, with the EU Commission, stating that the average CO2 emissions of passenger cars are to be reduced on a European fleet average to 140 grams/kilometre by the year 2008. Hence, BMW’s newly developed four-cylinder diesel engines are a further step taken successfully by BMW in reaching this objective, with CO2 emissions on the new BMW 120d dropping to 129, on the new BMW 118d to just 123 grams/kilometre.

The first and foremost reason for the exceptional efficiency offered by the new four-cylinder petrol engines is High Precision Injection already introduced by BMW on the Company’s straight-six power units. For the first time, this second-generation direct gasoline injection offers significant reduction of fuel consumption also under practical driving conditions. And now, on BMW’s four-cylinder power units, High Precision Injection is featured exclusively in the particularly fuel-efficient lean burn mode. At the same time the new four-cylinders offer a significant increase in driving dynamics and motoring pleasure provided by the increase in power over the previous engines.

The 125 kW/170 hp 2.0-litre four-cylinder with High Precision Injection has already made a truly impressive debut in every respect in the new BMW 320i Convertible. And now this outstanding engine with its dynamic power and performance combined with supreme economy is likewise hitting the headlines in the new BMW 120i, offering a reduction in fuel consumption versus the previous model by approximately 14 per cent to 6.4 litres/100 kilometres or 44.1 mpg Imp.

This engine with its cutting-edge technology shares many common features and similarities with the current racing engine developed by the BMW Sauber F1 Team not only in terms of the number of cylinders and the engine’s basic technology, but also in terms of production methods and the choice of materials used. The engine block as such comes from BMW’s light-alloy foundry in Landshut near Munich, which also builds the engine blocks for BMW’s Formula 1 engines. The crankcase is made of a cast aluminium/silicon alloy, and both the pistons and cylinder head are also made of aluminium. The entire crankcase as well as the crankshaft are extremely compact and ultra-strong, with maximum torsional stiffness. The V8 power unit featured in the new BMW M3 offers the additional advantage of impressive weight benefits, again reflecting BMW’s pledge to EfficientDynamics. For despite the larger number of cylinders and the significant increase in power, this new engine is lighter than the straight-six power unit in the former model.

EfficientDynamics: a powerful strategy with a great tradition.

The quest for EfficientDynamics has a long tradition in the development of BMW power units. And this philosophy is combined with numerous innovations giving BMW’s engine range truly unique appeal and popularity. Introducing fully variable VALVETRONIC valve control in 2001, BMW presented an impressive technology offering a significant reduction of fuel consumption under everyday driving conditions even back then.

Also referred to as “throttle-free load management”, VALVETRONIC is now featured throughout BMW’s entire range of engines and has in the meantime proven its benefits in more than a million cars the world over. BMW then took another significant step in 2004 with the introduction of the composite magnesium/aluminium crankcase on the straight-six power unit. From the start, this new engine combined 12 per cent more power with a reduction in fuel consumption by approximately 10 per cent. And the weightsaving is equally impressive, the composite magnesium/aluminium crankcase weighing only 57 per cent of a conventional grey-cast iron cylinder block and also about 24 per cent lighter than a comparable aluminium crankcase.

Offering their unique combination of economy and powerful muscle from the ground up, BMW’s diesel engines have been increasing their share in the market consistently for several years. So progress in this area also follows the EfficientDynamics development strategy in every respect. BMW’s range of engines thus comprises the world’s most sporting and dynamic six-cylinder diesel using Variable Twin Turbo technology to develop maximum output of 210 kW/286 hp and peak torque of 580 Newton-metres or 427 lb-ft from 3.0 litres engine capacity. Fuel consumption remains very low despite these impressive figures, this sports diesel making do in the new BMW 535d with just 6.8 litres/100 kilometres in the EU test cycle, equal to 41.5 mpg Imp.

Innovations to the last detail for enhanced efficiency all round.

Over and above the ongoing development of BMW power units as such, a number of innovations in the ancillary units surrounding the engines also serve to reduce both fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. As an example, most BMWs already feature a volume-flow controlled oil pump and an on-demand electrical coolant pump serving to reduce the amount of energy consumed by the ancillary units. And now, depending on the model, BMW engines also offer the opportunity to disconnect the air conditioning compressor, to improve fuel economy by the Auto Start Stop function and to tell the driver precisely when to shift gears for superior economy. Other new features with similar benefits are the new electrical power steering, the pressure-controlled electrical fuel pump, as well as aerodynamically optimised cooling and brake air flap systems.

Brake Energy Regeneration is yet another cutting-edge technology now available on all models and in conjunction with all engine variants: Featuring intelligent alternator control, this new technology concentrates the conversion of fuel into electrical energy on engine overrun and application of the brakes, thus masterminding the generation and use of electrical energy with a high standard of efficiency and at the same time enhancing driving dynamics and performance while the car is under power. Brake Energy Regeneration is indeed an important step towards intelligent energy management in the car, at the same time providing the foundation for further steps in the hybridisation of drive systems.

Hybrid concepts: moving forward to production standard.

The effect of Brake Energy Regeneration is described by engineers as “passive boosting” or, perhaps even more appropriately, “micro-hybridisation”. The medium-term objective in developing power units with EfficientDynamics is however to achieve even more effective interaction in the use of primary and electrical energy.

Precisely this kind of hybrid concept is currently being jointly developed by the General Motors Corporation, DaimlerChrysler, and the BMW Group. This is indeed a fully integrated combination of electric motors and a transmission with fixed transmission ratios, this two-mode concept, as it is called, serving to provide the most fuel-efficient driving mode under all kinds of load conditions. Such a hybrid car might therefore run either on its two electric motors alone, on the combustion engine alone, or with all power units for superior performance. And the hybrid transmission being jointly developed by the partners in this project might also be used on existing combustion engines.

A long-term option already available today: hydrogen drive.

Introducing the BMW Hydrogen 7, BMW already provides a clear outlook at the long-term future of individual mobility in 2006: The world’s first luxury saloon for everyday use running on hydrogen paves the way into a new dimension of emission-free mobility independent of fossil fuels. The dual-mode combustion engine featured in the BMW Hydrogen 7 therefore runs on both hydrogen and conventional gasoline fuel in the same cylinders, the V12 power unit developing maximum output of 191 kW/260 hp.

Pursuing a consistent CleanEnergy strategy, BMW is focusing clearly on the use of liquid hydrogen as a source of energy. The introduction of BMW Hydrogen 7 therefore also provides the necessary momentum for developing and enlarging the hydrogen supply infrastructure in our modern world.

The long-term objective in this development process is to consistently use hydrogen gained in a regenerating process as the ideal source of energy for the automobile. So with its trendsetting drive concept, BMW Hydrogen 7will become the pacemaker for sustained mobility fully compatible with the environment.

Honda's interpretation of how a future hybrid model might appear is making its world premiere at Geneva. Honda Small Hybrid Sports Concept, a design study model, demonstrates a unique fusion of advanced environmental technology, exciting styling and fun-to-drive characteristics.

The Small Hybrid Sports Concept is conceived around a front-wheel drive, small car platform and is powered by a Honda IMA 4-cylinder petrol/electric hybrid system driving through a CVT transmission. It explores the idea that a car can have a low environmental impact yet still deliver all the driving enjoyment expected of a compact sports car.

The aerodynamically efficient and curvaceous two-door sports coupe is characterised by short front and rear overhangs, wheelarches that wrap tightly around large wheels, and curvaceous, subtly contoured surfaces contrasting with sharp 'folded' edges along the waistline and at each corner. An accentuated, arrow-like nose features a full width air intake with Civic family overtones. This sweeps forward into a distinct protruding centre section complete with 'H' logo.

The Concept model's fluid lines are created by a steeply raked windscreen which extends back above the occupants' heads where it meets a one piece glass roof. This in turn flows rearwards to give the car its fastback styling, terminating in a distinctive and futuristic 3D floating glass design – a concave element which forms an additional vertical window. At its base, further distinction is provided by a 'floating' LED tail light unit that stretches across the full width of the car. At its centre, the glass panel extends downwards and contains an illuminated 'Small Hybrid Sports' name plate.

The Hybrid Sports Concept is equipped with 165/60 section tyres mounted on 20-inch distinctive rims. Their dimension supports low rolling resistance without compromising sporty driving.

Compact external dimensions lend themselves to nimble, agile performance on the road and help to ensure a good power to weight ratio. 4000 mm in length, 1270 mm tall and 1760 mm wide, and the 2350 mm wheelbase, in conjunction with a sports suspension, delivers stable and predictable handling characteristics.

The body is particularly aerodynamically efficient and compact. Rear-facing digital cameras take the place of conventional door mirrors. The Small Hybrid Sports Concept has been developed as a design study model by the design studio at Honda R&D Europe based in Offenbach, Germany.

• with electronic power steering.

On all models except the base models, it will provide a stand-alone backup camera with a multi-information screen, not tied to a navigation system. And, Highlander will have the distinction of being the first Toyota division vehicle to feature both active head restraints and a new hood and fender system designed to crumple on impact with a pedestrian.

On the outside, Highlander moves away from traditional SUV styling cues with a statement of strength instead of ruggedness; of intelligence over toughness. Calty Design Research in Newport Beach, Calif. sculpted clean, crisp lines, a wide, stable stance and muscular contours to give Highlander an advanced, contemporary, forceful and dynamic personality.

Highlander rides on an all-new chassis derived from the current Camry and Avalon. It is nearly four inches longer and three inches wider, with an inch more ground clearance and three inches of additional wheelbase.

Interior designers took full advantage of Highlander's substantial dimensions. Design intelligence is carried through to the refined interior, where smart and sophisticated blend with practical, flexible and versatile.

The passenger compartment is open and airy. Convenient and innovative interior features such as flexible seating arrangements, and ease of entry and exit, were directly related to customer input.

For example, Highlander's second-row features captain's chairs with armrests that, if needed, can be converted to a bench seat for three passengers. A "Center Stow" seat, when not in use, is hidden in a compartment under the front center console. In its place, passengers can easily snap in the provided center stow center console or choose to leave the area open as a walk-through to the third row. The second row also slides forward and back 4.7 inches and reclines.

Clever and convenient standard features include:
• a third-row bench seat with foldable headrests for a flat rear cargo area,
• a rear glass hatch for quick access to the back (optional on base grades),
• and Smart Start and Entry for Limited and all hybrid models.

When Highlander arrives in July, it will be offered in Base, Sport and Limited grades. All three grades will be powered by a new 3.5-liter V6 that delivers an impressive 270 horsepower -- a 55 horsepower gain over the previous generation's 3.3-liter engine.

Two months later, the all-new Highlander Hybrid will arrive at dealerships. Offered in both Base and Limited grades, all Highlander hybrids will feature Toyota's advanced VDIM stability system. The system integrates:
• full-time four-wheel drive with intelligence,
• electronic brake and throttle control,
• with true electronically-controlled active steering.

Highlander's advanced Hybrid Synergy Drive system has been extensively upgraded and refined for 2008 for both power and economy. The new Highlander gained about 500 pounds, growing significantly in every dimension and receiving extensive body and chassis reinforcement, aimed specifically at achieving best-in-class crash ratings. Not only were engineers able to increase output to 270 net horsepower, they were able to maintain Highlander Hybrid's impressive fuel economy at 31 city and 27 highway.

The Highlander will be loaded with standard-equipped comfort and convenience features. Nineteen-inch alloy wheels will be standard on both Sport and Limited gas models and both hybrid models.

An array of options and accessories will be offered, such as a power backdoor that can be opened and closed with a key fob, a navigation system with an eight-inch screen, a rear-seat entertainment system with a nine-inch screen, and three-zone air conditioning.

Other options include:
• JBL audio with six-disc changer and nine speakers with Bluetooth,
• third-row seat delete to create a second-row model,
• leather seat trim and heated seats,
• and a tow package with a 5000-lbs. maximum towing capacity (class-leading for car & van-based mid SUVs).

"The 2008 Highlander takes the car-based SUV concept to a new level," said Esmond. "I say that with conviction, because it's a category we invented."

The Toyota RAV4, now in its third generation, was the world's-first car-based SUV. In 1998, Lexus established a whole new category of car-based luxury SUVs when it launched the RX300. The debut of Highlander in 2001 marked the beginning of a shift in the mid-size SUV segment, from truck platforms to car platforms.

"As you can see, the new Highlander has raised the bar significantly," said Esmond. "Last year we did the same with RAV4. And in about a year, we'll do the same with both Land Cruiser and Sequoia. The Toyota division now markets a six-vehicle SUV lineup that appeals to specific buyer demographics and life-stages. It is a lineup that gives us enormous flexibility in responding to shifts in the marketplace. We are committed to keeping our products fresh and at the front of the pack."

Geneva Preview: Honda to debut a compact Hybrid Sports Concept

“Small is big in Europe” so Honda rightfully decided to preview a compact Hybrid Coupe at the upcoming Geneva Show. Information on the Small Hybrid Sports Concept” is scarce–apart from the fact that it was conceived by Honda R&D Europe based in Offenbach, Germany so for now we’ll have to do with that plus a vague rendering. -Continued: Click “Read More…” below to see the full press release on Honda’s Geneva Display

PRESS RELEASE: Honda at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show

February 5, 2007– Honda will be presenting the world debut of an exciting new concept car at the forthcoming 2007 Geneva motor show, as well as showing the fully driveable FCX Concept fuel cell car in Europe for the first time. A press conference will be held on the Honda stand in Hall 4 on Press Day, 6 March, between 12:00 noon and 12:15 pm.

Honda Small Hybrid Sports Concept
Honda Small Hybrid Sports Concept represents Honda’s proposal for a future hybrid model. The Concept demonstrates a unique fusion of advanced hybrid technology and fun-to-drive sports car characteristics. The Small Hybrid Sports Concept, which has been designed by Honda R&D Europe based in Offenbach, Germany explores the idea that a car can have a low environmental impact yet still deliver all the driving enjoyment expected of a compact sports car.

Fully driveable Honda FCX Concept demonstrates Honda’s advanced fuel cell technology
The fully functional Honda FCX Concept will be on display for the first time in Europe. The concept model features a newly developed compact, high-efficient Honda FC Stack as well as a long-floor, low-riding, short-nose body. It offers a comfortably large cabin and futuristic styling along with significant improvements in power output and environmental performance. The FCX Concept offers practical driving performance with a range of 570 km (Honda calculations when driven in LA4 mode) and a top speed limited to 160 km/h. Limited marketing of a totally new fuel cell vehicle based on the FCX Concept model is to begin in Japan and the US in 2008.

Next-generation clean diesel engine
Further technical innovation will be represented in Geneva by the company’s next-generation diesel engine that uses world-first technology to reduce emissions to the same level of a petrol engine. A revolutionary catalytic converter reduces NOx (oxides of nitrogen) emissions to a level that enables the engine to meet the stringent US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier II/Bin 5 requirements.

The catalytic converter features an innovative system that uses the reductive reaction of ammonia to ‘detoxify’ oxides of nitrogen (NOx) by converting them into harmless nitrogen (N2). However, unlike Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems which use urea injection, Honda’s innovative technology uses ammonia generated within the catalytic converter. Honda plans to introduce its next-generation diesel engine within three years.

Honda’s Motorsports challengers for 2007
On public display for the first time will be the Honda Racing F1 Team’s brand new race car, the RA107. Honda’s commitment to motorsport will also be represented at the show by the Civic Type R race car based on the just-launched road car. Developed in close cooperation with Italy’s JAS Motorsport, the Civic Type R is aiming for even greater success than its forebear, which has proved popular in European motor sport circles since its introduction in 2002. The car is being developed to Group N and Group A, as well as the new Group R specifications to be introduced in 2008.

Honda’s production models and accessories
The stand will also feature examples of the brand-new CR-V and Civic Type R models, as well as the rest of the Honda range. The company’s extensive range of accessories will be showcased on the upper level of the stand, including a CR-V Aero Performance Pack.
